Most of us would choose a dog or a cat as a pet. But some of us might also go for pets like turtles. Turtles are very special pets. It does not require a lot of handling but sure is a great pet to have. As turtles are different in nature from cats or dogs, you need to know a few things to be able to provide a healthy environment for turtles.

I have had 13 turtles as a pet and it is my favorite as pet. So I know a lot about how to take care of those beautiful creatures and will be giving you some of the most useful tips about pet turtles.

First of all make sure that you prepare the right type of home for the turtles. How the home would be, depends on the species and size of the turtles and their habits. Turtles are highly adaptable to any kind of situation but the best is to set up a house that suits them. Some of the turtle owners would go with an aquarium size glass box or terrarium and modify it into a nice house. You could also use a goldfish jar to keep the turtle.

While making the house you should keep in mind that the home should be spacious. This is necessary as turtles will have to have enough space to walk around. And moreover you should make sure that the pet is secured from any attack in it’s home.

Outdoor pens make a great home for turtles. The only thing you should ensure is a good fencing all around the cage and also at the base so that the turtle cannot go free and become a prey to other animals. You could also opt for heavy boxes as a cheap cost home for turtles but it is not a secured option. Goldfish jars are secured but not spacious and your turtle might get bored inside it. A spacious aquarium would make a great home for turtles and it is also secured. So I would suggest you to go with an aquarium or an outdoor pen as a home for your turtle.

When you are done with fixing the home, shift your attention to fulfill the basic requirements of your turtle. Supply enough water and keep the drinking and swimming water separately. Change the water every day and keep the water containers clean. Supply them with foods like earthworms, lettuce, carrots or some other foods that they like. You will also find turtle foods in market. Buy the one that has enough calcium in it.

It is a nature of turtles to hide. So make a hollow wooden structure that your pet can use as a cave and they would love it. You would find these woods in the pet shops. If you can, provide clean straw to make it cozier for your turtle. Keep the light and temperature at a consistent rate as it suits the turtles.

Birds are very sensitive creatures compared to our usual pets like cats or dogs. And this is one thing that so many of the bird owners fail to understand. This might be bad for the bird. There might be so many health concerns for a bird like infections or molting. But the good news is that, these health disasters can be easily avoided with a proper nutrition, habitation and regular visit to veterinary. We all love our pets. When your pets give birth to their off springs, it almost feels like becoming a grandpa or grandma. If you have a cat for long enough time, I guess you are familiar to this feeling. Kittens are very sensitive creatures and the first year of their life is the most important one. This is the time when they learn to behave; their manners and they grow to what they will be for the rest of their life. But most importantly, this is the time when you bond with them.

Like any other new comer, the first week of the kitten’s life is very critical. They are very vulnerable at this part of life. They tend to stay close to their mother and need the nutrition to grow stronger. As their fur is not well developed, you need to ensure a nice warm temperature for them. Keep them in a safe place as it might be a lucrative food for rats and other predators.

After 6 weeks the kittens will still tend to stay close to their mother. But it is important for them to learn the ways of life and defense. The mom should be around the kittens to teach them the important skills. This will continue till the 12th week.

Around the 13th week the baby teeth will start to be replaced by adult teeth. This is the right time to start the practice of teeth cleaning. The kittens at this age tend to fight the adult cats but the adults always make a point about who is the boss around here.

Starting from the 27th week up to 52nd week they will grow the personality traits and behaviors which are similar to the adult cats. They might act a bit rude at this point even to you. Don’t be hurt. Keep loving them and give them affection but never force it.

Understanding and treating your kittens the right way during the first year of their life can create a strong bond between you and your kitten. If you have a chance to help the kittens grow to adult cats, you will feel great and it is always a great fun.

Recently a lot of people have taken huge interest in keeping parrots as a pet. Parrots are lot of fun and it’s easy to take good care of them. One of the best pet birds is diamond dove.

Diamond doves live from 5-20 years and grow to the size of parakeets or budgerigars. The colour of these birds is remarkably beautiful. Normally the male ones will have bluish gray touch on the necks, back, wings and head. They would also have a circular orange mark around their eyes. Their female counterparts have more brownish touch to their head, neck and wings and their orange circles are not as well defined as their male counterparts. The diamond doves also come in silver, blue, yellow or pure white colours.

Unlike few other species of parrots, doves are not noisy at all. They would make a gentle “coo-coo” sound. Female doves also make the same sort of sound but they sound softer.

Diamonds are always the happiest when they are in company of their own kind. If you want to have a family of dove then buy a pair but if you don’t, buy a single dove. Give them a little time and they will surely bond with you.

You might find your bird following you around while you are working at your home. Be careful not to step on them as they tend to walk around the ground. Most of their time, they would be poking their cage floor.

Speaking of cage, make sure you provide your dove with a cage that has enough space length wise. Give them enough space to fly perch to perch. A 2 feet by 2 feet cage will do just fine for a pair of diamond doves and they will also be able to breed in that cage. Keep the cage floor clean from any metal wire as the bird will pluck the floor for grains.
Feeding diamond doves is a simple process. Provide them a diet containing finch seeds mixed with millet. You might also add a vitamin powder. Feed them egg crumbles occasionally. Grit is a very important food for the diamond doves. Grit helps them to crush the seeds they eat. Grit is also a fantastic source of calcium.

Each diamond dove has a different personality. Once they bond with you, they are much like house cats. They might be lazy, aggressive or even very attention demanding. You can train your bird to sit on the hand held perches once you call her name.

Iguanas are becoming a very popular pet. They are quiet and never create a mess as big as a dog or a cat. But there are still few things that should be known by the iguana owners.

Like every other pet iguana needs a good habitat. So many of us would just go with a cardboard box. But this is no good for the iguanas.
Iguanas grow rapidly. So their home should be made considering that a full grown iguana can freely roam around in the enclosure. Iguanas can grow up to 5-7 feet. So a box of 10 feet in length 5 feet deep and 8 -10 feet tall is considered to be a suitable one. Supply plenty of water to offer humidity and soaking facility for your pet.

Iguana should be kept under a warm temperature. A temperature of 85 degree F is suitable for digestion. Use thermometers to get the precise reading. Provide artificial lighting if you have to. But make sure iguana does not burn itself by leaning against the bulb. Give enough exposure to the sunlight but ensure enough shade as well.

The most common species of iguanas are herbivorous. Do not feed them animal protein. If you really want to feed them then do not do it more than once a month. Anything more than that might cause damage to the kidney. Do not rely only on cabbages and stuff. It could cause thyroid problem. Leafy vegetables like mustard, collard and turnip greens are suitable for the iguanas.

Ensure a good habitat, a healthy environment and good diet for your iguana and you will have a great pet for years to come.
